What is an addon domain? Print

Addon domains are fully functional domains that can be setup from within your cPanel control panel. You can host multiple domains sharing the same control panel, you have the ability to setup email addresses & databases the same way you would for your primary domain on the account.

How an Addon Domain Works

When you setup an addon domain, three things happen:

  • a new folder is created in your public_html directory
  • a new sub domain is setup for the primary domain and attached to the new folder
  • addon domain is connected to the sub domain

For example, if the primary domain was 'xyz.com' and you assign the Addon Domain '789.com' to the folder '789', the following routes (URLs) would be true:

  • xyz.com/789
  • 789.xyz.com
  • 789.com

All of these paths would access the same directory and show the same website. Visitors going to 789.com would never know they are being routed through 789.xyz.com. The addon domain will act as an independent domain, with no references to the primary domain.

This happens automatically when you setup an Addon domain. There is no further action required other than loading your content into the addon domain's newly created folder.
